“Running Through Life: Stories of Passion and Resilience”
We’re back with part two of our running blog series, and today we’re focusing on The Social Benefits of Running as we share Margret’s journey from weight loss to life long friendships.
Running is often seen as a solitary sport, but in reality, it’s so much more than just putting one foot in front of the other. For me, running is a social experience that brings people together, creating communities and sharing support in our health and fitness journeys. As a member of local running clubs and a regular at my local Park Run, I’ve discovered that the social aspect of running is what keeps me motivated and committed.
When I first signed up for running, my primary goal was to lose weight. However, it quickly evolved into a lifestyle choice that is both rewarding and fun. Every runner starts at their own pace – be it a 5k, 10k, 10-miler, half marathon, or all the way up to a full marathon. With each season comes a new goal, and for me at the moment, to run Dublin Marathon https://irishlifedublinmarathon.ie/ later this month is the ultimate prize. The thought of crossing that finish line with a shiny medal is exhilarating!
Training in a group setting makes the journey towards my goals much more enjoyable. Whether you’re racing to do your personal best or simply running for fun and a bit of goss along the way, there’s a sense of camaraderie that comes from training together. We cheer each other on, share tips, and give that extra nudge when someone feels like they have had enough. In our clubs, fashion plays a big role too! It’s always fun to hear compliments about my latest leggings or running shoes. It’s all about support and encouragement
One of the best parts of being part of a running community is the sporting encouragement. It’s so important to check in on fellow runners, especially if someone hasn’t been training for a while. Are they injured? Feeling deflated? Facing the challenges of life? And it’s so nice to know that support is there when you are down. We come together through everything—from a tough training day to the everyday hurdles that life throws our way.
Balancing the demands of life while training for an event can be tough, but the support from friends does make the difference. Especially during big events like marathons, with friends and family cheering from the sidelines you feel you can accomplish anything. My son is teasing that he will cycle along side me on marathon day, and I know my friends will be there to help manage the pre-race nerves!

While the social aspects and community support bring the joy into my running journey, you can’t forget about the essentials—like training plans, nutrition, and the right gear.
